Liquor Stores PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 08 February 2007
Liquor outlets were victimized more often than any other type of retailer for eight of the eleven crimes typically perpetrated against retail industry types (i.e. Burglar, Vandalism, Shoplifting, Cheque/credit fraud, Employee theft, Assaults/threat, Armed robbery, Theft from vehicles, Unarmed robbery, Theft of motor vehicle and Employee fraud), and for the rest they were in second position.

Liquor outlets accounted for about one quarter of all burglaries, shoplifting incidents and incidents of vandalism, and just under one-quarter of all crime incidents.

Liquor outlets appear to be particularly vulnerable to repeat incidents, making their overall risks higher than other sectors. This points to the fact that liquor outlets may be attractive to offenders because of what they sell.

Nearly three quarters of all Liquor stores have fallen victim to one of the above retail crimes and nearly half (44%) have suffered from multiple counts of shoplifting, while 37% have been burgled once and nearly one quarter have been burgled more than once.

Almost 20% of liquor store owners and/or staff has been assaulted while almost 10% of liquor storeowners and/or staff has been victims of armed robbery.

Liquor outlets suffer nearly a quarter (23%) of all retail crimes, including 25% of all burglary incidents, 23% of all vandalism incidents and 24% of all shoplifting incidents.

More than 20% of liquor stores have suffered losses due to cheque and/or credit card fraud, the highest of any retail industry.

Liquor outlets have the highest incidence of motor vehicle theft as well as theft from motor vehicles.

Pubs and Nightclubs
Nightclubs and Bars have often been forced to close their doors because of failing to control assaultive crime on the premises, and their inability to identify the assailants through their security and surveillance measures.
Nightclub problems arise when there is intentional over-crowding, over-serving of alcohol, failing to ban minors, admitting and serving obviously intoxicated persons, and known troublemakers.
Other liabilities include failure to control loitering in the parking lot, failure to establish and enforce reasonable club rules, and an intentional policy not to call the police when warranted.
Bouncers were statistically significantly more likely to experience both physical violence and over-all violence in the year than police officers.
The first step in creating prosperous, safe and sophisticated sites of alcohol consumption lies in regulating flows of population and allaying the insecurities of potential consumers, through their recognition of the security measures and surveillance available for their protection.
The nightclub is, at first glance, a chaotic space. But there is a concerted attempt at order.
Nightclubs are often equipped with CCTV surveillance, so that the Self Awareness Monitoring factor is ever present. This refers to the fact that customers and staff are aware that they may be constantly observed and thus are encouraged to behave both responsibly and legally.
